- BIRDING -
May is Bird Month in Nebraska. The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission and partner organizations celebrate with a variety of activities across the state throughout the month. This year’s theme is Protect insects, Protech Birds — because insects are an essential source of energy for birds during their migration journey.
Participate in the second Nebraska Birding Bowl and learn about birds, enjoy the outdoors and contribute data toward bird conservation. This fun, free statewide birding competition is returning this May for Nebraska Bird Month.
- COMPETITION -
As of the close of registration, 18,795 unique student-archers from 42 states are pre-registered to compete at one of two events in Bullseye and/or 3D. The first event will be the 2024 Western National Tournament followed by the Eastern National Tournament.
Theo Ribbs of Team Winchester had an outstanding performance in the FITASC event scoring 99/100, earning the highest overall. Another Team Winchester member, Joe Fanizzi, secured the Junior Main Event Champion title.
Berger’s Marketing Manager, Kenneth Lin, placed 2nd in F-Class Target Rifle (F/TR) at the 2024 Arizona State Mid-Range Championship with a grand aggregate of 1161-28X.

On April 6, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) hosted the National Archery in the Schools Program State Tournament at the Alachua County Sports and Events Center in Gainesville.
Chris Simmons of Team Lapua has brought home back-to-back 2nd place finishes at the Accuracy International Long Range Classic and the Yeti Spring Fling.
More than 2,400 students in grades 6-12 are expected to compete in the 54th Annual Cornhusker Trap Shoot May 2-4 on the home grounds of the Nebraska Trapshooting Association in Doniphan, Nebraska.
- CONSERVATION -
Ducks Unlimited (DU) has a new conservation partner who is helping to support critical waterfowl research in the Lowcountry. The Andy Quattlebaum and Blackwell Family Foundation have announced their support for a research project in partnership with DU and Clemson University.

- CONTESTS -
The Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department is pleased to announce winners of the 2024 Vermont Student Fish Art Contest in partnership with Wildlife Forever. The department received submissions from Vermont students in grades K-12.
- COURTS -
Plaintiffs in a federal challenge of the Illinois Public Transit carry ban have filed a brief in support of their earlier motion for summary judgment in the case, which is financially supported by the Second Amendment Foundation.
- EVENTS -
Kimber, Mfg., Inc., will be exhibiting selected suppressor compatible firearms at the Upcoming CAN CON presented by RECOIL in Phoenix Arizona from April 18th through April 20th.

- FISHING TOURNAMENTS -
The Association of Collegiate Anglers recently contested its third event of the 2023-24 season on the Bass Pro Shops Collegiate Bass Fishing Series. Along with the valuable prizes and points up for grabs, the Top 15 teams in the final tournament standings earned qualification into the 2024 Collegiate Bass Fishing Championship presented by Bass Pro Shops.

- HUNTING -
The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission will consider staff recommendations for 2024 deer, antelope and elk hunting seasons when it meets April 25 at Ponca State Park. The meeting will begin at 8 a.m. at the Missouri River Resource and Education Center, 88090 Spur 26 E, Ponca.

The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) will soon begin to offer electronic fingerprint services for individuals presenting challenges and appeals for FBI National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) denials.
The Outdoor Wire Digital Network welcomes Paul G. Markel as their newest Associate Editor. Mr. Markel will be charged with editorial submissions, conducting product reviews, as well as training and educational pieces.
Muzzleloader hunters in Wisconsin can now use Federal’s revolutionary FireStick system when hunting the designated statewide muzzleloader season in 2024. Consumers will also see a new affiliation with the Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation (CSF) on FireStick products as it continues to grow in popularity and use among muzzleloader enthusiasts nationwide.

Ali Weisz and Sagen Maddalena with their silver and gold medals in Women’s 10m Air Rifle at the 2024 CAT Games. USA Shooting earned a total of 16 medals at the competition March 31- April 8.

USA Shooting athletes brought home an impressive 16 medals from the 2024 Championship of the Americas (CAT) Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina, March 31-April 8.

The U.S. was one of the 21 countries competing for a chance to raise our flag over the podium. Over 170 athletes participated in the annual rifle and pistol competition. Many Paris 2024 Olympic qualified athletes competed and earned medals for the U.S. at the CAT Games.

Nick Mowrer, a two-time Olympian, earned the first medal for the U.S. with a silver in Men’s 10m Air Pistol. Mowrer made his way into the final after shooting a qualification score of 572. Teammate Jay Shi also shot a qualification score of 572 and competed in the final alongside Mowrer. Mowrer, a soldier in the U.S. Army World Class Athlete program, triumphed over Tugrul Ozer, of Canada, to win silver.

The women’s air pistol athletes continued America’s success by earning two more spots on the coveted podium. Paris Olympic qualified athletes Katelyn Abeln and Lexi Lagan earned silver and bronze respectively. Lagan qualified for the final by shooting a score of 576 and Abeln qualified with a score of 571. Lagan qualified for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games in Women’s Air Pistol and Abeln qualified for both Women’s Air and Sport Pistol.

Abeln also helped the Women’s 25m Sport Pistol Team claim the gold medal. Abeln shot alongside teammates Ada Korkhin, and Lisa Emmert Traciak.

Sagen Maddalena, also Paris qualified, earned the U.S. another CAT Games medal by securing gold in Women’s 50m Smallbore Rifle. Maddalena, a sergeant in the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit (USMAU), clenched gold by trumping Andrea Palafox, of Mexico, who finished second.

Maddalena tripled her gold medal count by also placing first in both Women’s 10m Air Rifle and 50m Rifle Prone. Sagen then earned a silver medal with teammate Ivan Roe in Mixed Team Air Rifle. Maddalena will be competing at the Paris Olympics this summer in both Women’s 10m Air Rifle and Women’s 50m Smallbore Rifle.

Roe, another Paris qualified athlete, took home more than just the mixed team silver medal. He topped the podium in Men’s 50m Smallbore Rifle, earning a gold medal by out shooting Tye Ikeda, of Canada, who finished second. Roe, a sergeant in the USAMA, went on to earn a total of six medals at the CAT Games. The Manhattan, Montana, native will be competing in Men’s 10m Air Rifle, Mixed Team Air Rifle, and Men’s 50m Smallbore Rifle this summer in Paris.

Tim Sherry, a staff sergeant in the USAMU, shared the podium with Roe and Braden Peiser when the trio earned gold in Men’s 50m Smallbore Team. Sherry, of Evergreen, Colorado, found himself back on the podium several times over the span of the competition. Sherry earned a total of four medals at the 2024 CAT Games.

Tokyo 2020 Olympian Ali Weisz, and 2023 Pan American Games medalist Rylan Kissell also contributed to the overall U.S. medal count. The duo earned gold in Mixed Team Air Rifle, Weisz took home silver in Women’s 10m Air Rifle and Kissell joined Sherry and Roe on the top of the podium for gold in Men’s 10m Air Rifle Team.
