Lipsey’s Unlocks the Past with New Smith & Wesson Mountain Gun Exclusive

Baton Rouge, La.—Lipsey’s, a nationally renowned firearms distributor, answers demand with the release of two all-new Smith & Wesson exclusive Mountain Guns without the internal key lock.

The Smith & Wesson models 629 and 686 Mountain Guns are some of the company’s most iconic offerings. They blend the classic lines of tapered barrels, beveled cylinders, and sleek design with modern endurance features and materials. This Lipsey’s Exclusive offering takes it to the next level with fancy walnut Bear Hug style grips from Tyler Gun Works, gold bead front sight, and, for the first time since 2001, does not have the internal lock.

Initially, there will be two offerings. The classic N-Frame 6-shot 629 44 Magnum and the highly sought-after L-Frame 686 Plus 7-shot 357 Magnum. Specific to the 686 model, there will be a ball detent lock up, and reinforced forcing cone area for added strength.

Jason Cloessner, Lipsey’s Vice President and Product Development Manager, on checking a box he’s had for a long time. “The Smith & Wesson 629 Mountain Gun was my first double-action revolver. I’ve been carrying it for over 30 years, and its features have always set the bar for what a field gun should be. Bringing these guns back to the market, better than ever, is something I’ve wanted to do as a Lipsey’s Exclusive for a long time.”

Andrew Gore, Smith & Wesson Handgun Project Manager, comments, “Creating history in 2025, Lipsey’s and Smith & Wesson have partnered to reintroduce the iconic Mountain Gun® series of Smith & Wesson revolvers and with No Internal Lock. Never wanting to be ordinary and befitting the title of a Lipsey’s Exclusive, the Mountain Guns will ship with pinned brass bead front sights and Tyler Gun Works Bear Hug grips made from high-grade walnut. The 686 Mountain Gun is also the first 686 to incorporate the updated ball-detent lock-up design that makes these the most durable 686 revolvers Smith & Wesson have made to date. Offering features usually only seen on a custom revolver, these new Lipsey’s Exclusive Smith & Wesson Mountain Guns are destined to be iconic and will be one of the most sought-after Smith & Wesson revolvers on the market today.”
