Blackfoot and Clark Fork River Closures Lifted Now That Power Lines Are Removed Bitterroot Closure Remains in Place

Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks reopened all portions of the Blackfoot and Clark Fork Rivers that were closed late last week due to danger from power lines in the river after the July 24 severe storm.

The Bitterroot River, from Chief Looking class Fishing Access Site (FAS) to the confluence with the Clark Fork River, remains closed.

The Blackfoot had been closed from River Junction to Russell Gates Memorial FAS and the Clark Fork from Milltown State Park to Petty Creek FAS in the aftermath of the storm, but both rivers are now free from closures.

A July 24 severe thunderstorm in the Missoula area caused extensive damage to power lines, trees, and property in the west-central Montana area.

Recreationists should still continue to use caution in areas impacted by the storm. Cleanup work continues and there is a chance you could encounter hazards and crews working to clear trees. Local rivers are carrying extra debris right now, creating safety hazards in the water that may not all be visible. Be extra careful and always scout ahead.

The closure on the portion of the lower Bitterroot River will stay in place until power lines are removed and safety concerns have been resolved. For more information on closures and restrictions, visit fwp.mt.gov/news/current-closures-restrictions.
