Quail and Upland Wildlife Federation Announces New Resource Site

In cooperation with the University of Missouri, MU Extension Service and the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC), the Quail and Upland Wildlife Federation (QUWF) added two additional categories to its “Research and Reference” section of its web site, www.QUWF.net. The two categories are “Invasive Species” and “Pasture Plants” using the information tabulated by the University of Missouri (MU), Extension service. The downloadable data sheets provide very specific information from proper ID, to control and eradication techniques. New Data sheets on various species are added weekly to assist landowners or land managers.

“This idea came from a brainstorming session with the MDC, one of the best opportunities with any partner to share real-time goals and problems for landowners, focusing on agriculture, cow/ calf operations and crops as it may pertain to wildlife and its habitat opportunities” states Craig Alderman of QUWF. “Private lands control the majority of all our habitat lands in the U.S. Experience proves these owners have to be approached from the very local, grass roots level, developing trust through integrity over the long haul. Now, we know landowners are in a battle with invasives like teasel, thistle, Johnson grass or multi floral rose here in the mid-west. These plants can literally take over a pasture or crop land if left unchecked” Alderman stresses. Compounding the issue is the extreme cost increases of chemicals and their application, thrown into dynamic calamity by the swings in weather, rain and or drought, whose timing can delay or prevent the proper control techniques.

“Through these MU data sheets, and our information portal, we can assist with the understanding and the basic pest or pests we are dealing with. Then, develop action plans to attack the issue and help our landowners whose budgets are razor thin right now” explains Nick Prough, Chief Wildlife Biologist for QUWF. “Pasture Plants” provides information on the common plant species that are in our pastures like wild blackberries and gives information on how to address them in control or eradication as well” Prough states.
