Celebrate Willow Slough Fish & Wildlife Area’s 75th anniversary June 1-2

Guided hikes and kayak paddles, as well as a community campfire, will be offered at Willow Slough Fish & Wildlife Area (FWA) June 1 and 2 to celebrate its 75th anniversary as a public property.

Known for its lake views, acres of wildlife habitat, and many recreation opportunities, Willow Slough FWA has supported community and wildlife health since 1949.

On June 1, the guided kayak paddles will take participants across the FWA’s 1,200-acre J.C. Murphey Lake while they learn about the habitat and take in the view. The lake is newly reopened after undergoing renovations. All equipment for the guided kayak paddles will be provided for registered attendees. Guests can also enjoy the lake’s newly installed and excellent wildlife watching opportunities.

A June 1 evening campfire will be offered in the community campfire rings, where guests can enjoy tranquil lake views and meet property staff. Guests are invited to bring food to eat at the many picnic tables in the campground near the property headquarters during the campfire. Registration for the campfire is not required.

On both days, guided hikes will be offered. Staff will talk about the property’s plants and animals while hikers enjoy the oak savanna habitat, lake views, and wildflowers. The more than 10,000 acres provide habitat for over 600 species of plants and 240 species of birds, including bobwhite quail and multiple rare and threatened species. Registration for the hikes is recommended but not required.
