Ribbon-Cutting Wednesday for New Accessible Playground at Baraga State Park

Join the Michigan Department of Natural Resources at a ribbon-cutting event to unveil a new, long-awaited accessible playground in Baraga State Park.

The media, partners and community members are all invited to a ribbon-cutting that will take place Wednesday, July 3 at 11 a.m. at 1300 US-41 South in Baraga.

The playground work was constructed as part of a community build project, through a collaborative partnership between the DNR, community members and the Michigan Army National Guard 107th Engineer Battalion as part of its Innovative Readiness Training.

"Our team is incredibly proud to continue to serve our community with our DNR partners, and assist in building a great park structure for all visitors to enjoy," said Capt. Trevor Kay, 107th Engineer Battalion Operations Officer.

The playground boasts swings, a wavy arch for a touchy-feely experience, and a tree fort playscape complete with climbing rocks, triple and spiral slides, log steps, a balance beam, tree climbers, a spinning leaf, climbing nets and connecting platforms. It all sits on a rubberized surface that makes access easier all mobility levels.

The playground also complements a new nonmotorized trail – partially funded by a grant from the Natural Resources Trust Fund – that connects the village of Baraga with Baraga State Park.

The park recently received recognition for its playground design at the 2024 mParks Conference and Trade Show. The park was selected as a national demonstration site for the new playground design. This prestigious designation recognizes playgrounds that meet the highest standards for inclusivity and accessibility.

The project was funded through $51,000 from GameTime and Sinclair Recreation through the 2023 mParks Statewide Funding Initiative, a $20,000 donation from Copper Shores Community Health Foundation, a $10,000 anonymous donation and DNR state parks capital outlay funds.

"This exciting playground project not only brings a new accessible amenity at the park, but provides local residents and guests a new recreational opportunity along the trail," said Kelly Somero, Baraga State Park accounting assistant. "We'd like to thank everyone who has supported and contributed to this project and are looking forward to seeing people enjoy the playground!”
