SAAMI was formed in 1926 at the request of the Federal Government with a mission to establish performance and dimensional standards for sporting arms and ammunition to ensure the safety, interchangeability, and reliability of these products. We currently publish five standards in accordance with the procedures and requirements of the American National Standards Institute, ANSI, covering shotshell, rimfire, centerfire pistol and revolver, and rifle ammunition and chambers and the abusive mishandling testing for firearms standard. SAAMI is currently developing a new standard for sound suppressors, with publication anticipated in Q3 of this year.
