KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Kansas City District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will temporarily close or reduce services at recreation areas across Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Iowa beginning May 15, 2025.

USACE is currently managing seasonal staffing and resource limitations that affect its ability to safely open and maintain all recreation sites at normal levels of service. These temporary adjustments are being made at all 18 Kansas City District lakes to ensure visitor safety, protect environmental resources and sustain critical hydropower and dam operations.

“We recognize closures of recreation areas and visitor centers are disruptive, but the Kansas City District is committed to providing safe, quality recreation opportunities and facilities for our visitors. We sincerely appreciate the public’s understanding as we navigate various challenges,” said Col. Andrew Niewohner, Kansas City District commander.

Although impacts will be seen at all 18 district lakes, there will be significant impacts at the following lake projects:

Campground Closures
The following campgrounds will be fully or partially closed for the 2025 season:

• North and South Outlet Park, Harlan County Lake, NE – closure of 25 primitive campsites, river access and day use remain open
• Minooka Park – Marshall Cove Loop, Wilson Lake, KS – closed for dispersed overnight use, day use remains open

Information Center Impacts
The following information centers will be closed:

• Hillsdale Lake Information Center, Hillsdale Lake, KS – closed to public, no public services including interagency pass and USACE annual pass sales. Visit store.usgs.gov/recreational-passes for sale information.
• Kanopolis Lake Information Center, Kanopolis Lake, KS – closed to the public, pass sales by appointment only.

Plan Ahead

Visitors are encouraged to verify the status of recreation sites before traveling and to consider alternative locations where needed.

Please follow all posted signage and closures. Respecting these limits helps protect public safety and ensures that facilities can reopen more effectively in the future.

Recreate Responsibly

When enjoying the outdoors, remember to:

• Know before you go - check weather, site status and safety alerts
• Bring the essentials - including water, maps and a backup plan
• Respect wildlife, fellow visitors and public lands
• Always wear a life jacket when on or near the water
