Gulf Council Holds First Recreational Initiative Working Group Meeting

The Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council will hold the first of three Recreational Initiative Working Group Meetings from 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM EDT on October 29 and 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM on October 30, 2024. The meeting will be held in the Council offices located at 4107 W. Spruce Street, Suite 200, Tampa, Florida 33607.

The Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council’s Recreational Initiative is an effort to evaluate past and current recreational reef fish management strategies and explore potential innovative management approaches that could be applied in the future. The effort will focus on 5 species as examples that might be applied to other species: red snapper, red grouper, gag grouper, greater amberjack, and gray triggerfish.

The Recreational Initiative Working Group, comprised of individuals representing key Gulf recreational fishing interests, including private anglers, for-hire operators, associated marine industries, and advocates. The meeting will be facilitated and operate using a consensus-based process. During this first meeting, the Working Group will identify recreational reef fish management challenges and successes and develop a vision, goals, and objectives for successful recreational management.

The meeting is open to the public and will be broadcast via webinar. Public comment for the first part of the Recreational Initiative will be solicited during a stand-alone Public Workshop that is scheduled for 6:00 – 9:00 PM EST on November 18, 2024.
