SACRAMENTO, CA – On this week’s Dead Meat with host Scott Leysath on Sportsman Channel, Leysath is on the island of Molokai in Hawaii looking for axis deer, which he doesn’t have to look far to find. Tune in for the all-new episode of Dead Meat on Sportsman Channel Saturday at 12:30 p.m. ET.
“The invasive axis deer is both a food source, but also a drain on island resources. Like most species that don’t belong in many areas, such as feral hogs, the axis deer are eating all the grasses and lower shrubbery that would typically help with run-off and feed other species. Since axis deer feed at night, and they like to feed near the road where the grass is left, the vehicle-to-deer collision rates are high,” shared Leysath.
Later in the show, Leysath heads to a locals home to see how they prep feral hog, venison loin and more for a game feed the next day.
This season, the series visits Florida for a swamp buggy snipe hunt, and then learns a new twist on cooking snipe, plus they land in Puerto Rico to see if Iguanas do really taste like chicken. And what one may consider a delicacy in other cultures (enter: Hagfish) are downright slimy and shall we say, gross, stateside. But Leysath is on a mission to find those people who make eating the less-desirable parts of animals, something they do daily.
