Thrity-two years is a long time. I've seen my three sons grow up, play soccer, run track, graduate from high school, college and all get terminal degrees in pharmacy, medicine and law.
Thirty two years is a long time. It out-dates, the legendary seasons of Ditka and Jordan.
Thirty two years is a long time. Both my wife and I have had long successful careers, and allowed us to retire from our "day jobs"
Thirty two years ago the Fishing and Outdoor Radio Show was born.
For the past few weeks I've spent many sleepless nights thinking about the show its past and future.
I thought about how the Fishing and Outdoor Radio Show had its humble beginnings in 1983 with a local AM station in Joliet, Illinois. In 1993 we moved to WCCQ 98.3 FM, one of two country stations in the Chicago market. Our time at WCCQ saw great growth for the station and us as hosts and co host. Then in 2004 we joined the Nelson Multi Media syndication and our show was being heard on three AM and three FM stations covering the Chicago fringe market of Kane, Will, DuPage, Grundy and LaSalle counties. Life is good!
I thought about the past 32 years of broadcasting memories. My thoughts centered on all the great guests we've interviewed in the fishing and hunting industry, thoughts about the special people that we've met that share the same passion of the outdoors. Thoughts of all the friends I've met and made over the years.
I thought about some of the people I've had the honor to call co host and share the microphone , Richard Fredrickson, Ray Ludkevicz and currently Don Dziedzina.
I thought about how we had an idea to recognize high school fishing programs throughout the State of Illinois that promote fishing at all levels. And how the fine folks at Plano-Frabill have allowed us to honor those programs………surely the highlight of my broadcasting career.
All great memories, that I wouldn't trade for all the fishing gear in the world!
Then I started to think about how I love spending my summers in Minnesota with my soul mate Jeannette, fishing and guiding for smallmouth bass…." living the dream"
Both co-host Don Dziedzina and I are quickly approaching our 67th birthday. Both Don and I have talked about and have asked ourselves "wonder how long we can keep doing this"? "This" being, one or both of us driving to the studio every Wednesday night 50 weeks a year to broadcast live the Fishing and Outdoor Radio Show.
Somebody once said (don't ask me who) " All good things must end" and I I'm both happy and sad to announce our last broadcast of the Fishing and Outdoor Radio Show will be Wednesday April 29, 2015.
As they say in radio…"stay tuned". Both Don and I will continue to freelance as outdoor writers and stay active in the Association of Great Lakes Outdoor Writers. Don will continue doing his award winning TV show "Illinois Outdoors". And I am seriously exploring Podcasting a new version of the Fishing and Outdoor Radio Show after the first of the year.
I have been very blessed over the past 32 years that you have allowed us to come into your homes, your cars and computers. Thank You for the Memories! See you on the lake or in the duck blind.
