The Michigan Department of Natural Resources Outdoor Skills Academy offers a beginner backpacking course Sept. 18-20 at Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park. Participants will learn trip planning, backcountry safety, Leave No Trace principles, and complete a 5.6-mile scenic hike. Cost is $105 per person including meals, with registration required by Aug. 14.

The Alabama Black Belt Adventures Association (ALBBAA) designated the 6th Annual Alabama Black Belt Birding Festival as the first official "Black Belt Signature Event," recognizing its role in promoting tourism and conservation.
