iSportsman Launches HazRDS Tool to Improve Safety, Identify Hazards in the Field

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA –iSportsman, the nation’s leading provider of outdoor recreational management software, has created a new digital tool as part of its suite of services. The tool allows hunters, anglers and other outdoor recreationists to instantly record and report in real-time the location of any hazard or other item of concern through their cell phone while in the field. The iSportsman HazRDS, for Hazard Reporting Data Service, is currently being offered as a free add-on to existing iSportsman clients using the service to manage hunting, fishing and other outdoor recreation on large lands utilized by the public.

Originally designed as a tool to record bear baiting sites and the discovery of unexploded ordnance (UXO) for several of iSportsman’s military clients, the tool’s simple functionality that allows a user to drop a pin on their location, describe the item or event and hit send to report it to the land or program managers, made it adaptable to a wide range of in-the-field reporting needs. HazRDS utilizes a user’s GPS functionality on their phone to drop a pin on a map marking their exact location. They can also briefly describe the hazard and even attach a photo from their phone of the item of concern.

Upon submission, iSportsman notifies the agency managing the land or activities with the data so they can respond to the concern. The tool can be used to record hazards such as UXO, concertina wire, well sites, wildfires, bear kills, mountain lion or other dangerous animal sightings, as well as the discovery of historical artifacts, endangered species sightings, vandalism or damaged infrastructure.

Conservation law enforcement officers at Camp Pendleton currently use the system to identify dangerous animals and other hazards encountered by officers so they can better manage potentially dangerous human-wildlife encounters. At Fort Wainwright in Alaska, they use the tool for bear hunters to indicate where they establish bear hunting sites to ensure compliance with existing regulations.

“A key driver behind the use of iSportsman to help manage any land access or recreational activity outdoors is to not only collect accurate user data, but to enhance user safety in the field as well. HazRDS is a great step to further this mission for our clients or anyone else looking to better identify hazards or discoveries that need to be brought to an agency or land manager’s attention and responded to,” said Doug Howlett, COO of iSportsman, LLC.

HazRDS is currently being offered to every active client of iSportsman for no charge as a value-added service and will be part of all levels of customizable iSportsman service going forward to new clients.
