DALLAS - DSC has selected master sculptor and silversmith Patrick Mavros as the Artist of the Year for the
Mavros, a renowned self-taught sculptor and jewelry designer, is considered by many to be one of the most important and influential silversmiths of his time. A valued and loyal supporter of DSC, Mavros has designed and donated the table centerpiece (valued at $25,000-$55,000) for the DSC Convention's Saturday night auction for over 10 years.
Mavros' story began more than 30 years ago as a member of the Selous Scouts fighting in the Rhodesian army. While recovering from an injury, he carved a pair of earrings for his wife Catja, which others took notice of. His work was so admired that he started taking orders and his business grew. He began using silver and adopted the age-old method of lost-wax casting to produce stunning individual sculptures depicting native wildlife.

His beautiful creations capture each individual creature's unique characteristics with a collection that ranges from exquisitely carved tiny silver teaspoons to enormous bespoke centerpieces.
Mavros was born into one of the oldest European families in Zimbabwe and was raised in the wilds of provincial Matabeleland. In addition to being a famed artist, he's also an accomplished bushman. His family farm sits atop the hills outside Harare where it operates not only as a home, but as a workshop, gallery space and wildlife sanctuary that employs local Zimbabweans.
A loyal supporter of DSC, Mavros has exhibited at the annual DSC Convention for 18 years, and DSC is honored to have him address the audience at this year's Saturday night banquet. As in years past, Mavros is donating his hand-created table favors for the 2020 DSC Ladies' Luncheon and insists on placing a single red rose at each place setting.
