It starts with the soil. Ensuring your soil has the proper chemical composition is critical to food plot success, but it doesn’t stop there. The physical condition of the soil is just as important. This is why components like the Firminator’s built-in cultipacker are so essential in allowing you to get the job done right, and more efficiently.
Before you can plan your food plot, you need to prepare the site by turning the soil. Shortening the top link on the Firminator’s main pitch adjustment leans the implement more heavily onto its disk assembly for a deeper cut into sod and stubborn soil. Switching to a mid-range setting gives varying degrees of disk depth, while simultaneously allowing the built-in cultipacker to maintain good ground contact. This helps break apart clods while leveling and firming the soil.
One of the most important, yet often overlooked steps in maximizing the productivity of your food plots is compacting, or “firming,” the soil. This improves seed-to-soil contact, which dramatically improves germination rates and plant growth. This also saves you time, money and effort that would otherwise be wasted on poorer growing crops. Proper firmination means better germination.
By lengthening the top link adjustment even more, the disks can be carried up off the ground allowing the cultipacker to roll on the soil with additional frame weight being transferred to it. This is ideal for passing over the field to firm up the seedbed before planting small seeds. More importantly, it can also be done during the seeding pass so the seed is dropped directly in front of the packer wheel, where it is pressed into the soil surface for superior seed-to-soil contact.
For sandy or fine silty soils, there’s a 16-inch Cultipacker Upgrade. Its larger wheel will easily roll over looser soils that tend to flow up and over the standard wheel. The larger wheels are 4" wide and 16" in diameter. The upgrade to the 16" wheels adds weight and surface area to allow the Accu-seed system to function properly in all soil types.
