Overland Park, Kansas- Final Approach has raised the standard for realism and performance with their new line of high definition (HD) duck decoys.
The decoy designs are produced by master carver Marty Hanson, who has been producing wood gunning decoys for serious waterfowlers and collectors for over thirty-two years.
During a recent interview, Marty discussed his methods and philosophy behind the creation of his decoys.
Q. What sets your decoys apart from others that are on the market?
"I concentrate on having the proper form and attitude in my decoy designs," said Hanson. "Since my decoys are created to actually be used in the field, I stay away from complicated poses and strive for a more natural look. Decorative or contest decoys look great on a shelf, but not in a hunting spread. A decoy also has to be rugged enough to stand up to hard day-to-day use."
Q. How do you come up with your designs?
"I've spent 33 years hunting, carving, and handling live ducks, so I have a feel and intimate knowledge of how a duck should look in motion on the water. I want the species/decoy to be recognizable from a distance".
Q. Once you have your design in mind, how do you get started producing the actual decoy?
"Once I arrive at the look I want, I rough the decoy out with a hatchet and draw knife to get the general shape. The masters I create for Final Approach are carved either from cedar or tupelo wood. I log the cedar myself. The tupelo is cut by a Cajun decoy maker I have known for years. After I have the decoy body roughed out, I start to carve in the details by hand to facilitate the painting process. I then add the carved head to the body and put in the glass eyes."
Q. Where does the decoy go from there?
"Once I have the carving completed, the decoy is then sealed and sent for casting to create the mold. I believe the finished products have unequalled realism and durability."
Final Approach HD duck and goose decoys feature custom-quality paint schemes, flawless anatomy, and unmatched levels of texture and feather detail to produce the most effective decoys in production today.
They come in a variety of poses and species including Mallards, Black Ducks, Pintail, Widgeon, Bluebill, Wood Ducks and Blue-Winged Teal in drake and hen models. Oversized Mallard/Black Duck field models are also available with realistic legs molded from actual birds.
